LARES VALLEY TREK

INTRODUCTION

This Lares Valley 4 day itinerary offers an outstanding combination of amazing mountain and valley scenery in a remote area, this trek is an excellent alternative for those who want to get off the ‘beaten track’ and have an insight into authentic communities whilst being surrounded by stunning mountains, lakes and valley landscapes. This magical route starts from a small village in the Sacred Valley and ascends to 2 passes over 4,000 metres (13123 feet) passing through traditional and colourful villages to finish in the relaxing hot springs in Lares.
Spend a relaxing afternoon in the medicinal water of the Lares Hot Springs in this tour. The Lares Hot Springs are dark with minerals and therapeutic sulfur that naturally repair sore muscles, hydrate tired skin and hair, and replenish important minerals in the body. The hot springs are a perfect way to end a tour that also includes visiting a local market, exploring the Ancasmara ruins, and spending time with members of the indigenous community.

LARES COMMUNITY

For trekkers wanting to get off the well-beaten tourist path and escape to a part of Peru that has changed little over the last 500 years, the Lares trek is a must. This remote and rarely visited region offers the trekker an insight into the real lives of Andean farmers, dressed in their traditional brightly-colored ponchos. You will have the opportunity to see thatched stone houses surrounded by herds of llamas and alpacas. Inside the houses’ kitchens, you’ll see guinea pigs running loose. The trek itself is about as difficult as the Inca Trail. There are, however, two passes over 13,000 feet (4,000 meters), so it is essential that you are well acclimatized to the altitude before beginning the trek. If you are arriving from sea level, plan on spending at least 3 days in Cusco and the surrounding area before undertaking the trek.

    ITINERARY:

    Day 1:
We pick you up from your hotel at about 7am and in an approximately 2 hour bus ride we get at Huaran (2840m/9317ft), a small village in the Sacred Valley, the starting point of the trek. We will meet our horseman and the muleteers here and begin the exciting hike through the lush valley, following the mild uphill route of the Cancha Cancha River. It will take about 5 hours to reach the picturesque village of the same name where we`ll set up our camp for the night (3800m/12467ft).

    Day 2:
After having breakfast, we will leave the campsite and begin a steep ascent to the Pachacutec Pass (4458m/14625ft), the highest point of the trek. From here there are spectacular views of the snow-peaked mountain, Pitusiray, the Pachacutec Lake and the surrounding valleys. After the pass, we get along walking downwards into the next valley to reach the Quiswarani village (3700m/12138ft), where will spend the night. Along the route, the scenery is breathtaking – there are glacial lakes, waterfalls and snow-peaked mountains. This area is also rich in birdlife and there`s the chance of seeing the Andean ibis, the Andean geese and flamingoes amongst others.

    Day 3:
After having breakfast we start an ascent of about 3 hours to reach the Huillquijasa Pass (4200m/13779ft), the second highest pass of the trek. The views are impressive and worth the climbing! After this, we descend towards the village of Cuncani, passing by beautiful turquoise lakes along the way. We continue descending after Cuncani until we arrive at Lares’ hot springs. We will spend the night in a nearby campsite (3860m/12663ft).
